Aug. 25th - 29th   POSTER CONTESTS!!! 3RD - 5TH  and "Line Design Owls" K-2nd

This week in art the 3rd graders are starting their first attempt at entering an art poster contest sponsored by our local "Children's Day" committee.  This organization is dedicated to helping provide school supplies, clothes etc to students in need all over our city and and county school districts.  Each year they choose their current year's T-shirt design from poster entries sent to them by local young artist like our students here at Highland Elementary.  We are so excited about the possibility of helping out in this way.  Once the winner is chosen the T-shirts go on sale and all the proceeds go back to help the children in our area.  It is a "Win, Win" situation for all involved.  We get to let our artistic lights shine and at the same time help others in need.  Isn't that what being a good citizen is all about?  I sent home a flyer telling more about the contest, but the most important thing is that the students return them to me no later than Friday. Sept. 5th.  Be sure they have their names on the back as well as whose class they are in.  Make sure to keep it flat and NOT folded in anyway.

The 4th and 5th grade students are also participating in an art poster contest.  They are joining with the Ky. Transportation cabinet in their annual "Adopt-A-Highway Make It Yours" art contest.  The objective of this contest is to increase environmental awareness among children, to educate them about the devastating effects of litter and to change attitudes and behaviors about littering.  You can google "Past Ky. Adopt-a-Highway winners" to see what has won in the past.  The winners get to go to the state capitol and have breakfast with the governor as well as win some prizes too.  We hope to see a Highland student there this year!

In Kindergarten through 2nd grade they will be reviewing line designs and practicing their cutting skills by creating an owl.  Below are some of the students are work creating their owls and working on their posters.
