Oct. 21st- Oct. 25th Our Journey to Appalachia
    In an effort to support writing across the curriculum in art, the 4th and 5th graders will begin writing their narrative pieces based on historical fiction about the immigrants from Scotland that settled in the Appalachian mountains.  They will be using the following outline to help them compose this paper.  The due date is the week of Nov. 18th - 21st.  They are to turn in a typed copy of their work on the day they have art that week.  They also need to turn in their notebooks that contain all their pre-writing and rough drafts. 



OUR JOURNEY TO APPALACHIA
Deadline: Papers due the week of Nov. 18th -22nd, on the day you come to art.

You assignment is to write a narrative in the style of historical fiction.  Make sure you use all the words in the Word Bank. The words should help guide you through the most important parts of the story. Be sure to underline all your vocabulary words as you write your story and mark them off the list as you use them.  This will help you make sure that you are covering all the events.   Your paper should follow the following outline and have at least 5 paragraphs.  It can have more if you need them.

Expostion:
Introductory paragraph must include the following information.

Setting: year 1845, Glasgow, Scotland

(You need to pick from one of the characters listed below and then write the paper in first person using words like I and me. )

Characters:  The Robinson family, includes Ma and Pa Robinson, their children George, age 12, Lizzie age 8, and their new baby Meg, age 1.  They will also take Grandma Stuart along with them. She is a master weaver.

Conflict: 
The Robinson Family has decided to immigrate to America and be one of the first families to go West into Ky. as pioneers.  Their destination is a settlement called Barbourville, near the Cumberland Gap.  There are several reasons they have decided to immigrate to America. First, their family business of weaving handmade wool is being threatened by a local factory.  Second, they are seeking the freedoms that only can be found in America.  Last, they hope to have a brighter future with the thought of free land.  They know it will be a hard and difficult journey, but are willing to take the risks.

                  joined others to make a wagon train

Climax:

              clear the land of rocks, trees and shrubs

               Clear more logs and cut them to build a cabin
               Meanwhile slept and found shelter under the covered wagon
               Built cabin by hand with help from others
               Made all the furniture
           Made pottery to eat off
           Made candles to see and tell time with
           Made quilts for the cold winters
           Made toys from corn husks and wood
           Made baskets from reeds
           Did woodworking for most all the other things we would need

Falling Action and Resolution:

Be sure to include that Grand Ma Stuart started weaving wool  and used her loom to start making more money in our  new home.
     

You are to bring all your work with you to ART each week and to COMPUTER LAB.  You will be required to type your paper and will have time to do that in computer lab. 

Week one Oct. 21st – 25th Introduction to the ideas and instruction from Mr. Woodward. Begin paper in class.

Week two Oct. 28th – Nov. 1st  second week to work on paper in class, begin typing what you wrote in computer lab.

Week three Nov. 4th – 8th work on paper in class and type in computer lab.
Week 4 Nov. 11th – 15th finish writing paper and turn finish typing in lab.

Week 5 Nov. 18th – 22nd turn in typed copy of your work with all your prewriting.  DO NOT TURN IN WITHOUT YOUR PREWRITING!  KEEP all your prewriting, brainstorming, revisions, sloppy copies, etc.
