Feb. 4th -8th

This week in art we are going to tackle the art challenge sent out by “Google”. As you probably have noticed before, the word “Google” is always decorated with art that centers around a theme. Recently the “Google” company has sent out a call for all young artists to create their version of “Google” centered around the theme, “My best day ever….”. They are asking all school children ages K-12 to participate. It is a free contest with unbelievable prizes both for the winner and their school. The first place winner will receive a $30,000 dollar scholarship to the college of their choice plus win $50,000 in technology winnings for their school. There are also other prizes. This could be life changing for the winner and we have some mighty fine young artists here at Highland. I believe we have just as good a chance at winning as anyone. Each child K- 5 will receive an entry form that will need to be filled out by the parent and returned back to me at school. I want to encourage each student to put some thought into it before beginning. I can’t wait to see what they come up with.

They will need to give their forms and the artwork to their homeroom teachers and the teachers can give to me by homerooms. This will help me stay organized. The deadline March 22, 2013. In order to make sure we have everything turned in on time, I would like to have their completed work no later than Tues. Feb. 19^th.

Checklist of exiting 5th grade skills in Art

In all the areas listed below the students should be able to create, respond, identify, and perform. In addition, they need the skills to write and talk about art in both the peer review setting and with their own artwork as well as that of master artists.

Art Elements:

Line - all types

Shape - 2-D geometric and free form

Form - 3-D geometric and free form

Color - primary, secondary, warm, cool, color wheel, ROYGBIV, monochromatic, analogous, complementary, tint, shade, hue, chroma, earth tones, neutrals

Value - lightness, darkness, hatching, cross-hatching, scumbling, grey scale

Texture - real or implied, roughness or smothness

Space - negative or positive

Principles of Art:

Balance - symmetrical, asymmetrical, formal, informal, radial

Emphasis - focal point, relation of size, placement, color contrast, proportion, scale, size, etc.

Movement - elements that make your eye move toward the emphasis

Ceremonial - used in worship or other special services

Subjects in Art:

Portraits - people or person

Landscape - places (waterscapes or cityscapes)

Still Life - things or objects

Styles of Art:

Realistic - look real

Abstract - can tell what it is but is not realistic

Non-Objective - is not intended to look like anything recognizable

Media in Art:

Materials used in a work of art (paint, pastels, pencils, clay, etc.)

Tools in Art:

Brushes, carving tools, scissors, potter's wheel, loom, etc.

Culture Studies

Native Americans - functional and ceremonial art. All the various tribes, traditions, customs, natural resources and beliefs and how "art" was a part of their daily life

Early Americans - functional and non-functional art, landscapes, portraits, silversmiths, etc.

Folk/Appalachian Culture - functional art - quilting, pottery, baskets, carving, etc.

West African - functional and ceremonial art - masks, weaving, abstract figure sculpture

Careers in Art - includes all of the traditional jobs plus technological arts such as graphic design, computer generated art, advertising, textile design, photography, product design, comics, etc.

Types of Art - 2-D and 3-D, collage, mobiles, etc.

Processes of Art - (can include those not listed) drawing, painting, collage, pottery, sculpture, weaving, printing, mosaics, origami, etc.
