Earlier in the school year the African Children's Choir visited our school. The told about their culture through music, art and dace. Now that we are ready for our African Unit we will be referring back to their visit to help make connections. Below are some pictures of their visit and the masks our children are creating.
In art this week we will create a ceremonial African
Mask. We will discuss the purpose of the
mask and the beliefs held by the African people. Masks were worn for worship
and for various ceremonies like transitioning into adulthood, marriages,
funerals, before or after a war or during times of illness. The wearer believed that the spirit of an
ancestor or animal would come over the wearer giving them special powers for
good or evil. Certain animals masks were
reserved for various purposes because of their meaning. They were usually made of wood, leather,
metal or pieces of fabric. The continent
of Africa has 54 countries more than any other continent in the world.
