Nov.4th - Nov. 8th Realistic Appalachian Still Life
This week the K - 2nd graders will be learning more about everyday Appalachian pioneer life by drawing a still life using some the functional objects they might have used. We will start the lesson by reviewing where the Appalachian Mts. are located. We discuss the Cherokee that lived there first and how they were displaced by the early pioneers from Scotland. They brought with them a strong work ethic and their customs and traditions. Because they lived in a mountainous region back in Scotland they were accustomed to the lifestyle required of them to survive the harsh conditions of the Appalachian Mountains.
We talked about how they made their own pottery, baskets, quilts, candles, and other household items and tools. Many of those are included in their still life. We even listened and watch a short video of a man playing a dulcimer. The dulcimer is a common folk instrument used by the mountain people. Below are some pictures of the still life and the students working on their creations.
