Checklist of exiting 5th grade skills in Art

In all the areas listed below the students should be able to create, respond, identify, and perform. In addition, they need the skills to write and talk about art in both the peer review setting and with their own artwork as well as that of master artists.

Art Elements:

Line - all types

Shape - 2-D geometric and free form

Form - 3-D geometric and free form

Color - primary, secondary, warm, cool, color wheel, ROYGBIV, monochromatic, analogous, complementary, tint, shade, hue, chroma, earth tones, neutrals

Value - lightness, darkness, hatching, cross-hatching, scumbling, grey scale

Texture - real or implied, roughness or smothness

Space - negative or positive

Principles of Art:

Balance - symmetrical, asymmetrical, formal, informal, radial

Emphasis - focal point, relation of size, placement, color contrast, proportion, scale, size, etc.

Rhythm - repetition, patterns, motif, random pattern, regular pattern, alternating pattern

Movement - elements that make your eye move toward the emphasis

Unity - all the elements work together as a whole

Harmony - the similar elements work together

Purposes of Art:

Expressive - expresses emotion

Narrative - tells a story

Functional - art that can be used

Non-functional - for enjoyment only

Ceremonial - used in worship or other special services

Subjects in Art:

Portraits - people or person

Landscape - places (waterscapes or cityscapes)

Still Life - things or objects

Styles of Art:

Realistic - look real

Abstract - can tell what it is but is not realistic

Non-Objective - is not intended to look like anything recognizable

Media in Art:

Materials used in a work of art (paint, pastels, pencils, clay, etc.)

Tools in Art:

Brushes, carving tools, scissors, potter's wheel, loom, etc.

Culture Studies

Native Americans - functional and ceremonial art. All the various tribes, traditions, customs, natural resources and beliefs and how "art" was a part of their daily life

Early Americans - functional and non-functional art, landscapes, portraits, silversmiths, etc.

Folk/Appalachian Culture - functional art - quilting, pottery, baskets, carving, etc.

West African - functional and ceremonial art - masks, weaving, abstract figure sculpture

Careers in Art - includes all of the traditional jobs plus technological arts such as graphic design, computer generated art, advertising, textile design, photography, product design, comics, etc.

Types of Art - 2-D and 3-D, collage, mobiles, etc.

Processes of Art - (can include those not listed) drawing, painting, collage, pottery, sculpture, weaving, printing, mosaics, origami, etc.
